About Our Feature

Syd Emmanuel Arrojo, aka La Espiritista is a Latinx American Seattle based artist, performer, poet, and writer originally from New Jersey. They are a multi-talented artist that expresses their creative nature through many forms of rhythm some including Spoken Word Art, Creative Writing, Colorful Sketches, Singing, and Wooden Instruments.

La Espiritista’s work includes their workshop “Estamos Unidos: A Calling Through the Universal Heartbeat” as their response to the tragedy in PULSE Orlando June 12th, 2016. This gathering (as they like to reclaim language) is an intimate ceremony honoring ancestors and the lives passed on. It is also a celebration beckoning people to explore the complexities of their Latinx Identities or heritages. It has been featured at The National LGBTQ’s Task Force’s Creating Change Conference, Chico State, UC Davis, as well as Seattle University.

La Espiritista has featured at Seattle Poetry Slam, Nuyorican Poets Café, and the Pride Center of New Jersey. They have performed alongside talented individuals such as the poet La Bruja, Denise Frohman, and musician Will Shish—which they have collaborated with for their poem “Unfold.” They also performed in La Ti Do’s Celebration of Trans Artist Produced by Trans Women of Color Collective (TWOCC) and La Ti Do, curated by Ancient Jazz Priestess of Mother Africa, Trans Performance Artist, Singer, Actress, Dancer, Writer, Lady Dane Figueroa Edidi.
