We the People

by Von Bellows

We the People,
In order to form a more exclusive union
Do hereby deny our unalienable rights
Of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness

Our country will provide us with happiness
We have no need to speak freely
Thus, relinquish the first amendment
And strip the people of their voices–
No need to brag about your freedoms

Allow our mainstream media cycle to echo
Your opinions and reality
They will tell the world of our triumph,
How America’s silver spoon roads weave
Through great cities and everyone is in
Their very own reality TV show

We are, America the Great
A Juggernaut of Misconception
Here to establish chaos
Insure domestic terrorism
Neglect the general welfare of citizens
And restrict the blessings of liberty
by capitalizing on your poverty
Do not ordain
Nor establish the status quo
This Constitution is a white-knuckled promise
A handshake with no relief
The lie used to ruse
We the People
Into utter complacency.
A Bay Area transplant born in Washington, DC, 26 year-old Von ‘DaWiZard’ Bellows was a member of the 2015 Oakland Poetry Slam Team; in 2007 and 2008, Von competed in the Brave New Voices National Youth poetry slam. Upon beginning his freshman year at Elizabeth City State University in 2007, Von founded the school’s first poetry organization and slam team, the Free Mindz Poets, which continues to produce great artists and minds now 8 years later. During performances he overcomes the constant obstacle of a speech impediment that has been a struggle since childhood. He currently works as the Program Director for Urban Knights Radio (powered by Academy of Art University) where his love of speaking to an audience and music can mix and merge live over the air through his morning show, ‘The OtherSide’.
